Lawyer. Organizer. Planner. One of these things is not like the other.
2007 was a big year for me. I graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law. I bought (and renovated) my first home. I took the bar exam (oh, the nightmare). I began my first post-graduate legal job as a judicial clerk. I passed the bar exam and was sworn in as a licensed attorney in the state of South Carolina.
Today, I practice law in Columbia, SC with an amazing group of people whom I consider family. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy my work—especially now that I’ve transitioned from employment litigation defense to transactional employment law. I am blessed beyond measure to earn what I earn so I can help provide for my family.
But there are certain things in life that you just have a knack for. Things that don’t feel like “work.” Things that bring you great joy. Things you could do every single day. For me, organizing and planning are those things. I don’t know what it is, but I love trying to figure out solutions to organization dilemmas. I love home décor. I love planning parties. I love baking and trying new recipes. I love making things look pretty.
I became a lawyer because I wanted to help people. Of course, with what I do now, I help corporations. J But, that same sense of wanting to help others is what drives my passion for organizing and planning. I can’t tell you the relief you feel when you make sense of all of the clutter you’ve accumulated. It makes life so much easier when things have a designated space, and you can actually find what you’re looking for in no time.
I am a firm believer that when your space is organized, you feel better about it. And as someone who has never met a sale she didn’t love, I also know that you don’t have to break the bank to get your space in order. Hello Home Goods, Marshalls, Target, and the Dollar Tree!
And then there’s planning. I love to plan small events. I’m a spreadsheet, excel, checklist kind of girl. There’s nothing like coming up with a theme and watching it come to life. Thank heavens for Pinterest! I have no problem being behind the scenes and making sure everything runs as it should. I guess that’s the introvert in me. I don’t necessarily want to be the life of the party, but I love bringing life to the party.
Practicing law is my number one gig. Daycare doesn’t pay for itself! Seriously, can we pause for a moment to lament about the cost of daycare… gracious. But, as I’m growing and maturing into the woman I want to be, I know I have to pursue my creative passion as well. I’d be doing a disservice to myself if I didn’t use my gifts and talents to help others.
So, that’s me. Lawyer. Organizer. Planner. One of these things is not like the other. And that’s just fine with me.
